As Middle East Regional Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Advisor you are responsible for strengthening Mental Health and Psychosocial competencies and programming in War Child’s country programmes in the Middle East through collaboration with country teams, the global Programmes Quality team and the Research and Development Department. Among other things, you work on operationalization of the Programme Quality Strategic Plan with a focus on War Child’s Programme Guidelines and Thematic Strategies, through technical support, collaboration and quality assurance. The ME Regional MHPSS advisor contributes to the development of country strategies, leads programme competency building (structured learning, coaching), and is available for surge capacity for emergencies.

The Regional MHPSS Advisor reports directly to the Regional Representative for the Middle East.

They collaborate with in-country MHPSS senior staff and Programme (Development/Implementation) Managers, but also closely with the global Programme Quality team, Regional Child Protection Advisor, the Regional Education Advisor, and the Regional Researcher. The Regional MHPSS Advisor is an active member of the Global MHPSS group and the global Programme Quality Team.

This position is preferably based in Amman, Jordan, but other War Child country offices in the region can be discussed.

Your Challenge

  • Support country programs to acquire and maintain sufficient resources and expertise to develop, monitor and implement evidence-based MHPSS programming
  • Lead MHPSS competency development in the region
  • Coordinate regional working groups linked to the quality implementation of key MHPSS approaches, methodologies and strategies.
  • Guide MHPSS inputs into country and global strategies, policies and guidance
  • Deploy and be available for MHPSS for War Child in the region supporting country CP/MHPSS teams in conducting assessments and deliver and monitor quality CP/MHPSS response.
  • Contribute to the global thematic development work and advocacy in War Child’s MHPSS priority areas and core interventions
  • Contribute to development of core interventions of the War Child care system
  • Ensure that MHPSS programme quality and M&E standards are adhered to in countries in line with War Child’s Thematic guidelines, M&E framework and other relevant policies
  • Proactively coordinate and provide opportunities for cross-country MHPSS knowledge acquisition, capacity and competency development
  • Gather lessons learnt from countries MHPSS programs, including documentation and dissemination of new knowledge and ensure that lessons learnt are shared
  • Share and disseminate relevant MHMHPSS material among countries
  • Attend and contribute to coordination initiatives for MHPSS in the region, and contribute to the development of regional initiatives focused on MHPSS
  • Represent War Child in relevant regional and/or international MHPSS technical fora, including relevant regional MHPSS donor meetings
  • Coordinate with other regional MHPSS organizations and stakeholders
  • Support efforts to fundraise to expand MHPSS programs in the region, based on evidence gathered, monitored and analyzed in countries
  • Coordinate with War Child’s global Programme Quality Team and R&D Department to share lessons learned and follow up on development of MHPSS (core) interventions.

Your Profile

· Higher Education in Social Sciences, International Development or related fields

· Extensive experience, progressively responsible, working on MHPSS programming in the Middle East

· Understanding of humanitarian principles and established international standards on MHPSS for children in humanitarian settings

· Experience of preparing concept notes for fundraising

· Excellent understanding of M&E processes and methodologies relevant for MHPSS

· Extensive experience of competency and capacity development, including facilitating, coaching and supporting learning across multiple stakeholders

· Fluency in English; Fluency in Arabic is desirable

· Strong facilitation and negotiation skills

· Problem-solving and result oriented mentality

· Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills

· Fully support War Child’s mandate and mission.

The organisation

War Child has been working in the Middle East since 2008 on psychosocial support, child protection and education programmes for vulnerable children. War Child is currently working in Lebanon, Jordan and the occupied Palestinian territories. Frequent travel within the region is essential.
