TITLE: Gender Expert Short Term Consultant

LOCATION: Amman, Jordan

REPORTS TO: Deputy Director MENA

ABA ROLI is a non-profit program that implements legal reform programs in roughly 40 countries around the world. ABA ROLI has nearly 400 professional staff working abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organizations, including human rights groups.

JOB SUMMARY

ABA ROLI seeks Short Term Gender Experts to work on a program countering gender-based violence in Jordan. Experts will implement workshops and trainings on topics such as understanding GBV, User-Centered Approaches for Service Providers, and Training for Lawyers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Works with ABA ROLI staff and consultants to develop virtual training that meets stated objectives and participant needs on at least one of the topics listed below.
• Develop workshop curricula or exercises to fulfill stated objectives.
• Conduct at least two sessions of half day training for an estimated 30-40 participants.
• Draft a final training report summarizing the key aspects of the training and any major results.
• Undertake any other tasks required for the successful completion of the training.

Workshop topics will address the following subtopics:

Understanding GBV:

• Definitions of GBV.
• Safeguarding.
• Do no harm.
• Gender mainstreaming.
• Gender sensitivity.
• Gender power dynamics and other related topics,

User Centered Design Approaches:

• Informed consent.
• Risk Assessment of GBV case.
• How to interview, counsel, and represent GBV survivors in line with Do No Harm principles.
• How to engage more effectively with victims.
• How to develop trauma-informed and individualized case management and service plans accounting for GBV survivors’ holistic needs (legal, economic, psychosocial, and medical) and collect feedback from survivors and service providers.
• Documentation.

Training for Lawyers:

• Victim representation
• GBV protections in Jordanian law
• Strategic litigation, innovative defense arguments, building a case file
• Alternatives for incarceration.
• Gender sensitivity.
• Listening techniques and legal counselling.
• How to invest in international conventions & charters in judicial pleadings, specifically in women’s rights issues.

Local Partner Trainings

• Trauma-informed interviewing.
• Holistic risk assessment and safety planning, counseling, and referrals.
• Psychosocial counselling.
• Sexual and reproductive health.
• Economic strengthening services.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Direct experience providing gender technical support, capacity building, and delivering training to a range of audiences and participants
• Extensive experience developing and implementing trainings, workshops, seminars on sensitive topics like GBV.
• Strong understanding of gender integration and women’s empowerment concepts, and integrated development programming.
• Experience working on US government awards.
• Working knowledge of MENA region and/or experience working in politically sensitive contexts is highly desirable.
• Excellent written, analytical and verbal communication skills.
• Availability to begin immediately.
