Regional Solutions Officer – Researcher

Closing date: 05 Mar 2019

Who are we?

The Danish Refugee Council assists refugees and internally displaced persons across the globe: we provide emergency aid, fight for their rights, and strengthen their opportunity for a brighter future. We work in conflict-affected areas, along the displacement routes, and in the countries where refugees settle. In cooperation with local communities, we strive for responsible and sustainable solutions. We work toward successful integration and – whenever possible – for the fulfillment of the wish to return home.

The Danish Refugee Council was founded in Denmark in 1956, and has since grown to become an international humanitarian organization with more than 7,000 staff and 8,000 volunteers. Our vision is a dignified life for all displaced.

All of our efforts are based on our value compass: humanity, respect, independence and neutrality, participation, and honesty and transparency.

DRC has been operating in the Middle East (ME) region for over a decade, running a combination of emergency, livelihood, protection and advocacy programmes through Country Offices (COs) in Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey with a Regional Office (RO) in Amman.

About the job

Since the start of the Syrian crisis, more than 6 million people have been internally displaced and another 5.6 million have fled Syria. Syria’s neighbouring countries are currently hosting 97% of the Syrian refugees, where refugees face increasing difficulties to make ends meet. While the crisis is well into its seventh year a sustainable end to the conflict remains uncertain and displacement is becoming more protracted. The search for durable solutions will become central to humanitarian and development assistance in the coming years.

DRC, IRC, and NRC jointly run the Durable Solutions Platform (DSP). The objective of this platform is to develop strategic research around the long-term future of Syrian refugees and internally displaced people in the Middle East. DSP’s research informs humanitarian programming and advocacy with the overall objective of ensuring availability of durable solutions for Syrian displaced.

The platform’s work consists of research around the three durable solutions – repatriation, local integration and resettlement – which forms the basis for stakeholder engagement and advocacy. Further, the platform invests in the strengthening of the advocacy capacity of Syrian civil society on issues related to durable solutions and the rights of displaced Syrians. The platform’s research assists NGOs in developing joint programmatic principles and strategies and supports advocacy work.

The platform consists of a small team and is hosted by the DRC regional office in Amman, Jordan.
