Mission & Context
MSF-OCP has recently increased the number of hospitals running in the Middle East region :
- Reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation centers in Amman, Jordan and Bagdad, Iraq
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit PICU and NICU (Zhale) in Lebanon
- Traumatology and burn specialized hospitals in Aden, Yemen and Athma, Syria.
- General hospitals with or without maternity in Khamir, Yemen and Qayyara, Iraq.
- IPC remains a challenge for MSF and specifically in ME with the high burden of AMR.

AMR has been defined as a medical priority for Middle East Projects.
IPC Nurse Position is part of the regional team together with the SW MD and Microbiologist.
Main Purpose
- Assess and improve overall IPC program elements in MSF hospitals/projects to reduce the risk of HAI by providing on-site guidance and evidence-based recommendations to the multi-disciplinary teams
- Work closely with regional SW MD and Microbiologist to have a holistic approach in regards to prevention and control of infection.
Accountabilities
- Conduct field visits, audits and give advises for improvement and provide field visit reports in a positive constructive approach
- Follow up the implementation of the plan by organizing support at distance
- Participate in the recruitment and evaluation of IPC nurse/supervisor with the field team
- Assess skills of IPC nurses in the fields, makes sure the National IPC has the basic knowledge in infection prevention and propose plan for improvement, when necessary
- Train the national staff to build clear and usable action plan for improvement
- Train the national staff to have the “training” approach with the staff and use the participatory approach
- Train and support IPC supervisors in the implementation of IPC tools (HHOT and SIPCA)
- Empower the national staff into the position of IPC
- Set-up transversal harmonized standards across the mission in the region (MSF policies, protocols and guidelines)
- Provide on-site training in the field and participate in the regional training session in Amman
- Collaborate with regional microbiologist and regional SW to implement an outbreak alert system and outbreak response and management
- Provide advises in regards to the monthly stewardship report and action plans
- Participate / set up data collection system to follow IPC activities
- Make recommendations regarding construction, renovation and environmental rounds
- Collaborate with regional Hospital Engineer and Biomed for quality improvement
- Follow up IPC related issues from previous field visits from others (e.g. other Referents)
- Discuss the visit report with the team in the field and send final field visit reports to the Cell
- Brief and debrief expats who are going to the missions under his/her responsibility on IPC
Hierarchy
- In the fields, the IPC nurse Referent will be integrated in the mission and will report to the Medco/Surgco
- The Cells will define the priorities for the visits
- Paris HQ will provide technical support
Requirements
Education
Nurse or Medical Doctor
Experience
At least 5 years of previous experience in relevant positions
Language
English (essential) – Arabic (an asset)
