UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. The UNRWA provides education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance. UNRWA is the largest UN operation in the Middle East with more than 30,000 staff. UNRWA runs over 700 elementary and preparatory schools as well as eight Technical and Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) across the five Fields of operations. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.

Internship Opportunity

Department : Legal Department

Duty Station : Jordan Field Office

Type of Appointment : Full time internship, unpaid

Duration : Internship may commence at any time during the year and

for a duration of 3-6 months, depending on availability.

Expected Starting Date : 15 January 2020

Background:

The Internship is intended to serve two goals: (1) the intern should obtain substantial, broad and practical experience which will enhance their prospects for pursuing a legal or international law-related career in the UN system; and (2) the intern should make a substantial net contribution to the work of UNRWA’s Field Legal Office in Jordan.

Duties and responsibilities:

The internship will be linked to specific areas of work that correspond to the priorities of the Jordan Field Office of UNRWA. The specific areas of work would depend on the skill set, interests and expertise of the selected intern. Short and long-term assignments will be provided. Potential areas of work include, but are not limited to: neutrality, privileges and immunities, contracts and MOU’s, court cases involving the Agency or its staff members in their official capacity, communication with host government authorities, staff protection, detained staff, service accident injuries, investigations, procurement, staff conduct and discipline, implementation of HQ legal policies/guidance, training and official reporting required by the UN or donor agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

· A university degree from an accredited educational institution in law or near completion of a degree in law (within the last year);

· Strong analytical skills;

· Strong communication skills, keen judgment and ability to work in diverse settings;

· Excellent command of written and spoken English;

· Ability to use Microsoft Excel and Word.

Desirable Qualifications:

· Past experience in law or a law related field;

· Prior office experience;

· Written and spoken Arabic;

· Previous coursework or research in administrative law and public international law;
