Internship – Capacity Development and Monitoring & Evaluation in Amman, Jordan

Would you like to get experience in Capacity Development, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL)? Do you have a passion for agriculture research for development (AR4D)? We are seeking a young intern who is interested in an exciting internship addressing capacity development and MEL and a learning-by-doing experience with ICARDA to contribute to the enhancement of a capacity development database and a web-based MEL platform, and help us document and synthesize global monitoring data for effective evaluation and learning.

About ICARDA

The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is an international autonomous, non-profit, research organization supported by CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food-secure future. ICARDA’s mission is to reduce poverty, enhance food, water and nutritional security, as well as environmental health in the face of global challenges including climate change. We do this through innovative science, strategic partnerships, linking research to development and capacity development that take into account gender equality and the role of youth in transforming the dry areas. ICARDA works in partnership with governments, universities, civil society, national agricultural research organization, other CGIAR research Centres, and the private sector. Main responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Capacity Development Unit at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the intern will be responsible for the following duties:

· Document and catalogue existing Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning data available on ICARDA Capacity Development activities according to specific program guidance and templates. Curate a data base of previous activities

· Enter the catalogued data into the web-based MEL platform being developed and tested by the program.

· Link the data to program outputs (reports, publications, briefs, datasets, photos, tools, etc.) available in the existing repositories of the Programs.

· Learn about relevant methods, tools and skills used in a web-based information system environment and apply these to enhance the web-based MEL platform under close supervision and guidance from experts of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).

· Support the user-based testing and piloting of the above-mentioned web-based MEL platform enhanced with new features to be used in 2019

Education, qualifications and experience

Essential qualifications and competencies

· Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for this internship. However, the applicant must have academic, technical or hands-on experience dealing with basic information management particularly in the areas of:

  • data management;
  • design and implementation of monitoring, evaluation and research;
  • social research methods; and
  • data dissemination.

· Recently graduated (no more than 6 months of graduation at the time of application) or currently affiliated with an institution of higher education or research in pursuit of a Master’s degree in Development Studies, Social Studies, Rural Development or its equivalent experience with a formal qualification of monitoring and evaluation.

· Strongly motivated, open-minded to learn new knowledge and methods on a practical (learning-by-doing) and research question-oriented basis.

· Communication skills: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions of clarification, exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

· Excellent written and spoken English is required.

· Advanced computer skills in Excel and Word processing.

· Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve program goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect their own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Desirable qualifications and competencies

· Good skills in monitoring and evaluation are an additional advantage, but not a critical requirement as the intern will engage in a learning environment about basic and web-based operational skills.

Terms of appointment

The successful candidate will be offered an internship 4-6 months (to be mutually) agreed and with possibility of extension depending on performance.

The internship position is based at ICARDA in Amman, Jordan. A small monthly remuneration to cover costs of lunch and daily transportation to office will be provided. The intern is wholly responsible for all costs related to health insurance, accommodation and visa expenses. ICARDA does not provide medical, life and accident insurance for the internship; the selected candidate is expected to have their own insurance coverage. The successful candidate will report to Technical Officer of the Capacity Development Unit (CDU) at ICARDA.
