UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance. UNRWA is the largest UN operation in the Middle East with more than 30,000 staff. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.

Department : Executive Office

Duty Station : UNRWA HQ, Amman – Jordan.

Remote for duration of internship, international applicants welcomed.

Type of Appointment: Full time internship

Duration: Three months internship

Expected Starting Date: Immediately

Terms of Reference

BACKGROUND

Neutrality is a core UN principle that governs the way humanitarian response is carried out. Together with humanity, impartiality and independence, these principles are key in establishing the humanitarian space essential for the effective delivery of services during both peacetime and in periods of conflict. UNRWA is committed to the aforementioned principles, including the safeguarding of neutrality, as they are essential for the Agency to effectively protect and serve Palestine refugees.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week. The intern will work under the supervision of the Neutrality Coordinator. The internship provides a unique opportunity to be involved in the practical application of a key humanitarian principle.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Daily responsibilities and duties may include but are not limited to the following:

§ Drafting, editing and summarizing guidance documents;

§ Organizing and presenting data received in Word or Excel format;

§ Information and data management and presentation;

§ Innovatively improve the look and feel of key internal guidance documents in word and PowerPoint and/or other presentation tools within the confines of UNRWA’s style guide;

§ Production of creative and visual items for the Agency, such as videos, posters, manuals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education: A university degree from an accredited educational institution in Middle Eastern Studies, Development, International Relations, Anthropology, or any related subject;

Excellent IT skills.

Work Experience: Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.

Languages: Excellent command of spoken and written English.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

§ Arabic language (Modern Standard and ‘Ammiyya);

§ Knowledge of the UNRWA context / Palestine refugees;

§ Video Editing and Graphic Design (has Adobe Creative Cloud expertise);

§ Information knowledge skills;

§ Familiarity with statistics;

§ Monitoring and Evaluation;

§ Knowledge of effective social media tactics;

§ GIS.

COMPETENCIES

§ Ability to understand complex concepts in a short period of time;

§ Strong writing skills in English;

§ An understanding of the negotiation and diplomacy integral to a humanitarian organization;

§ Ability to work independently and juggle different projects;

§ Willingness to take the initiative in supporting the Neutrality Coordinator, putting experience and skills to use for new projects;

§ Good attitude and willingness to work with a remote team. **
